Ask your documents from Claude and ChatGPT with MCP

Connect a GitHub repository to Claude Code, Claude or ChatGPT in two minutes. Grape finds the file and line, so the AI reads only what it needs.

Your AI is good at reading code, but it doesn't know where to look. So it opens file after file, or you paste them in, and the context fills with code the question never needed. Grape fixes that: the AI asks Grape, and Grape answers with the files and lines that matter.

Before you start

  • A free Grape account.
  • A project made from a GitHub repository. In the app, open Projects, press GitHub repo and paste the link. Grape clones it, keeps the text of each file with a short brief, then deletes the clone and its git history. Nothing is uploaded by hand.
  • Your MCP URL, from Connect AI in the app. It is ready the moment you sign up. Keep it private, because it holds your API key.

Why a repo works well

Grape tells the AI where to look. A question about one function reads that function, not the whole repository.

  • Fewer tokens. Instead of opening whole files, the AI gets a ranked list of files and lines, with a brief of each file.
  • Nothing to paste or upload. One link, and every file in the repo is searchable.
  • Private. Grape keeps only the text it searches, never your git history, and never sends it to an AI provider.

To pick up new commits, press Pull latest at the top of the project.

In Claude Code running in your checkout, Grape points to the lines and Claude Code opens just those. In Claude or ChatGPT, the chat reads the code from Grape itself: fetch for the lines around a result, read_file for a whole file. It never has to go to GitHub.

Claude

  1. Open Settings, then Connectors, and press Add custom connector.
  2. Name it Grape and paste your MCP URL. Leave the OAuth fields empty.
  3. In a chat, turn Grape on from the tools menu and ask.

Claude Code

One line in a terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http grape https://grape-inc.in/mcp/grape_YOUR_KEY

ChatGPT

  1. Open Plugins and press New plugin.
  2. Choose Create MCP app and paste your MCP URL under Connection.
  3. Set Authentication to No auth and press Done.

Ask it

Where is the retry limit set, and how many times does a request retry?

In Claude Code, the model calls search and gets back src/client/retry.rs, line 42 at the top. It opens those lines in your checkout and answers: MAX_RETRIES is 5. It read a few dozen lines, not the whole repo.

Grape gives the AI four read-only tools:

  • search ranks passages across all your projects, with the project, file and line.
  • fetch reads about 40 lines around a result.
  • read_file reads a whole file, or a range of lines, by project and path.
  • list_projects tells the chat what each project holds, so it searches the right one.

Private by default

  • Grape never sends your files to an AI provider. The AI only sees what it searched for.
  • The tools only read. Nothing the chat does can change your projects.
  • If the URL leaks, press New key on API keys. The old URL stops working at once.

That's it. Connect a repo and ask your first question. The benchmark shows how Grape compares with vector RAG.
